« The Skylab » takes place during the summer holidays in a family house in Brittany. We are in 1979, and through the account of these two days, it is an era which will come back to life in front of our eyes. The film is built as a long flash-back of the main character, Albertine, caused by a train journey with her husband and her two children. In the course of this journey, she remembers another journey, when she was 10 years old. From 2010, we are now in july 1979. Albertine is with her parents and her maternal grand-mother, on the road to Aunt Suzette’s house, the sister of her father, for the holidays. It is the birthday of her paternal grand-mother, and the whole family is gathered together. Albertine is guiding us in her family. No Internet, no mobile phone, lunches and dinners are endless. Around the table, people talk and have words about politics, racism, and education. On the next tables, children hear everything. Albertine knows too much, hears too much. Parents’ anxieties are passing on to children. Hence, the American satellite launched by NASA, the Skylab, becomes a huge fantasized monster, although he is nothing but part of Anna’s obsessions, Albertine’s mother, as pretty as she is neurotic, persuaded that the satellite will crash on the French west coast. Despite their anecdotal side, these moments will stay engraved in Albertine’s memories forever.
